Removing a tree close to the house

When the trunk is a few feet from the wall, the wood cannot drop. The crew lowers it. Your job before that day is access, a clear drop, and a photo of any power line.

Gloved hands and a rope on a tree trunk beside a house wall

Key takeaways

  • Close trees are pieced down. That takes more setup than a tree in an open yard.
  • Do not start this with a chainsaw from a ladder. Our tree page says the same thing: if it needs a ladder, a rope, or a chainsaw, it is ours.
  • Lines nearby mean the power company first if the wood is on the wire.
  • Fences, AC units, and pools are targets. Name them.

Why the wood is lowered

In an open yard a crew can sometimes drop a piece into a clear gap. Beside a house there is no gap. The trunk is close to the wall, the cage, or the drive, so each piece is lowered into a spot you can point at.

Do not start the job with a ladder or a saw. If the wood is on a power line, the utility goes first. Your part is the ground: move the cars, open the side gate, and name the air conditioner, the fence, and the pool.

The stump is still there unless grinding was included. See standing tree removal and grinding versus digging the stump. Digging a stump out is closer to grading than to this removal.

Who this job is for

A fit

  • A trunk beside the house, the pool cage, or the drive.

A different service

  • The tree is already on the roof. Tree on the house.
  • You want the shade and the trunk is sound. Ask about pruning instead of removal.

What happens, in order

  1. 01

    Look

Lean, targets, and where a lowered piece can land.

  2. 02

    Decide

Remove, or prune if removal is not the right call.

  3. 03

    Do

Pieces come down into the zone we set, not onto the roof.

  4. 04

    Leave

Wood is handled as agreed. We walk the area we worked.
