The bed is patchy, faded, or down to sand. Add enough to return to 2 to 3 inches, after you pull the old collar off the trunk.

Replace mulch when you can see soil, when it is stacked on the bark, or when a storm washed it onto the walk. Two to three inches, pulled back from the trunk, is the working depth.
Ocala rain does two things to a bed. It packs good mulch into a mat, and it floats tired mulch out onto the lawn. You do not need a new layer every month. You need enough cover that the soil is not bare, without burying the bark of the plant.
The bed is patchy, faded, or down to sand. Add enough to return to 2 to 3 inches, after you pull the old collar off the trunk.
The mulch is matted, full of weeds, or piled up the trunk. Rake the excess back, weed, then lay a clean layer. A pile against the bark stays wet and invites rot.
| What you see | Pine bark or pine straw | Rock |
|---|---|---|
| Tree and shrub beds in sand | Yes. It breaks down and keeps the soil cooler. | No. It does not improve sandy soil. |
| A walkway you want to stay put | Straw can wash. Bark stays longer if it is not in a flood path. | Only where you are not trying to grow roots. |
| Mulch is touching the trunk | Pull it back, whichever product it is. | Pull it back. Rock against bark is still a pile. |
| You just ground a stump | Chips can cover the spot for a while. They are not a finished bed by themselves. | No. |
The trunk stays buried. New mulch makes the pile worse. Pull it back first.
Sandy soil stays hungry, and the rock heats the root zone. Save rock for a drainage bed, which is a construction choice, not a tree ring.
Mulch does not fix a sick tree or a drainage problem that floods the bed every rain. See tree care, fertilizer, bed maintenance, and the HOA and estate checklist.
Mulch is information for beds, not a mulch-only visit. If the beds are already on a maintenance route, say whether the mulch is thin or piled on the trunks.
